A little about this project
We were delighted to work with Valley Invicta Primary School at Aylesford to transform their outdoor play provision for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils. The school wanted to create engaging, challenging, and age-appropriate spaces that would encourage physical activity, imaginative play, and social interaction — all while meeting safety standards and blending beautifully into the natural surroundings.
KS1 Area – Designed for Younger Explorers
For the KS1 area, we designed, manufactured, and installed a bespoke hexagonal play tower standing at 1 metre high. This structure features a cedar shingle apex roof, adding a natural, high-quality finish. Attached to the tower are a slide, scramble net, rock wall, and ladder ramp, offering multiple routes of entry and exit to support varied physical development.
To add movement and adventure, we included a Robinia wobble bridge, introducing balance and coordination challenges in a fun and safe way.
The entire KS1 area was completed with rubber mulch safety surfacing, providing a soft, durable ground covering that ensures year-round usability and impact protection.
KS2 Area – Built for Bigger Challenges
In the KS2 zone, we installed a larger, more complex triple tower system, standing at 1.5 metres high. This structure was designed to appeal to older pupils, offering a greater level of challenge and variety. It includes bridges, a rock wall, integrated seating, a ladder, and a scramble net – promoting both active play and social interaction.
As with the KS1 area, the KS2 space was finished with rubber mulch safety surfacing to maintain a consistent look across the site and provide the necessary safety performance for higher play equipment.
The upgraded outdoor areas now provide two distinct, purpose-built play zones tailored to the developmental needs of both KS1 and KS2 pupils. Each area encourages physical activity, imaginative play, and peer interaction in a safe and stimulating environment.

At Sussex Road School we strive to develop bespoke outdoor environments on a fairly small site.
