OPAL Play Types

At Everyday Play, we love what OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) stands for.

We work with many schools that are registered with the OPAL programme and share the same vision: making outdoor play a vital part of every child’s development.

Central to OPAL’s approach are the OPAL Play Types, a framework that helps schools ensure children have access to rich, meaningful, and developmental play experiences.

Understanding OPAL Play Types

OPAL identifies eight key play types, each supporting different aspects of a child’s growth:

  1. Physical Play – Running, climbing, balancing, and swinging to build strength and coordination.

  2. Social Play – Cooperative games that develop communication, empathy, and teamwork.

  3. Imaginative Play – Pretend and role-play that spark creativity and narrative thinking.

  4. Rough-and-Tumble Play – Safe physical interaction that teaches negotiation and resilience.

  5. Creative Play – Building, making, and crafting that encourage innovation and self-expression.

  6. Exploratory Play – Engaging with natural materials and the environment to nurture curiosity.

  7. Communicative Play – Storytelling, language games, and interactive play to enhance communication.

  8. Deep Play – Immersive, child-led play that encourages problem-solving and risk-taking.

These play types provide a blueprint for schools to ensure every child’s play is varied, stimulating, and developmental.
