At Everyday Play, we believe the best playgrounds are not just made for children, but with them. When pupils have the chance to get involved in their school’s outdoor space, they take pride in it, they look after it, and most importantly, they feel part of it.
This was exactly the case at playground installation in London, Downsell Primary School, where we recently helped to create a new sensory area. As part of the project, we invited the children to take part in a very special activity that turned a simple path into something meaningful and completely unique.

One Pebble at a Time
Before we laid the new sensory path, each child was given a smooth pebble to decorate. With paint pens in hand, they set about creating bright patterns, mini artworks, names, symbols and thoughtful messages. Every pebble told a story and reflected the creativity and personality of the pupil who designed it.
Once all the pebbles were decorated, our installation team carefully laid them into the sensory path as part of the final surface. The result is a colourful and tactile walkway that not only looks fantastic, but has a real sense of ownership and identity.
Now, when the children walk along that path, they are walking over something they helped to create. They can point out their own pebble and feel proud that they were part of the project.

Why Involve Pupils in Playground Projects?
Getting pupils involved in any stage of the playground design or installation process has a number of important benefits.
Encourages a Sense of Ownership
When children contribute to their environment, they are more likely to take care of it. A playground becomes more than just a space to run around – it becomes their space.
Builds Creativity and Confidence
Even a small creative task, like decorating a stone, allows children to express themselves in a meaningful way. It can boost self-esteem and provide a lasting sense of achievement.
Supports Learning and Engagement
Activities like these can support wider learning, from discussions about design and space to group collaboration and sensory awareness. They are simple, hands-on experiences that children remember.
Makes the Space More Meaningful
Personal touches bring emotional connection. A playground filled with the children’s ideas and input will always feel more special and more engaging.
Creating Outdoor Spaces with Meaning
At Everyday Play, we love working with schools to create outdoor spaces that go beyond the ordinary. Whether it is a large playground transformation or a small sensory area, we are always happy to explore ways to involve pupils in the process.
From designing equipment to naming areas, decorating features or contributing ideas, children have so much to offer – and involving them makes the final result even better.
If you would like to talk about your next school playground project, we are here to help. We design and install bespoke play areas across the UK, including sensory paths, outdoor classrooms, obstacle courses and more.
