£18 Million Earmarked to Improve Play Areas in 66 Deprived Communities – Why Outdoor Play Matters

At Everyday Play, we design, manufacture, and install playgrounds that inspire creativity, activity, and fun – and we’re thrilled to see government investment recognising the importance of play.

£18 million has been earmarked to upgrade and create playgrounds in 66 of the most deprived communities across the UK, giving children safe, stimulating spaces to play, learn, and grow.

Why Outdoor Play Is Essential

Outdoor play isn’t just fun – it’s crucial for children’s development:

  • Children who spend at least 60 minutes a day playing outdoors are 25% more likely to meet recommended physical activity levels.
  • Play helps develop social, emotional, and problem-solving skills, fostering confidence and cooperation.
  • Time spent outside supports mental health and focus, helping children manage stress and build resilience.

Yet access to outdoor play isn’t equal. Children from deprived communities often have far fewer opportunities to play safely outdoors, limiting the benefits they receive. Investments like this one are vital to helping close that gap.

This milestone comes after sustained advocacy from organisations like Play England whose work has highlighted the inequalities in children’s access to outdoor play and helped secure funding to prioritise deprived areas.

How Everyday Play Supports Inclusive Outdoor Spaces

We’re passionate about creating inclusive, engaging, and safe playgrounds for all children. From sensory areas and adventure trails to role-play zones and creative outdoor classrooms, we design spaces that inspire curiosity, learning, and active play. All our equipment is UK-built, durable, and tailored to the needs of the community, ensuring playgrounds are both fun and long-lasting.

Play for the Future

Children make up 20% of the population but represent 100% of our future. By supporting initiatives like this £18 million investment and building high-quality, inclusive playgrounds, we can help every child explore, learn, and thrive – regardless of their background.

The government funding will directly benefit 66 communities across England, prioritising areas where children have the least access to safe outdoor play. These include Sandwell, Walsall, Dudley, Salford, Tameside, Wolverhampton, Redcar and Cleveland, Bolton, Oldham, Wirral, Rotherham, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Tendring, Knowsley, North East Lincolnshire, Hyndburn, Blackpool, East Lindsey, Thanet, Middlesbrough, Castle Point, Pendle, Trafford, Sunderland, Rochdale, Preston, Manchester, Stockport, Wyre, North Tyneside, Medway, Hartlepool, Sefton, St. Helens, County Durham, Dover, Blackburn with Darwen, Havant, Bradford, Wigan, Bury, Doncaster, Wakefield, Calderdale, Fenland, Bassetlaw, Kirklees, Darlington, Isle of Wight, North Northamptonshire, Torbay, Nuneaton and Bedworth, Eastbourne, Mansfield, Northumberland, Ashfield, Barnsley, Wychavon, Cheshire East, Canterbury, Hastings, Halton, Lincoln, West Lancashire, and Southend-on-Sea.

By targeting these communities, the funding will help ensure children in some of the most deprived areas of the country can enjoy safe, engaging, and inclusive playgrounds -providing the benefits of outdoor play that all children deserve.

If you’re looking to create or upgrade a playground, Everyday Play can help bring your vision to life with spaces that are safe, inspiring, and inclusive for every child.
