A little about this project

We were commissioned to design, manufacture, and install a bespoke sensory area that would provide a calm, engaging, and inclusive outdoor space for children of all abilities.

The goal was to create an environment that supports sensory exploration, imaginative play, social interaction, and quiet reflection.

Working closely with the setting, we developed a thoughtfully designed sensory space incorporating a range of tactile, visual, and auditory features:

  • A timber gazebo with built-in seating and a feather edge roof, offering a sheltered, shaded space for group activities or quiet time.
  • A storytelling chair with surrounding timber block seats, ideal for reading, imaginative play, or guided group time.
  • A vibrant multi-coloured walkway running through the area, designed to visually stimulate and guide movement around the space.
  • Sensory backboard panels and musical panels, providing interactive elements to engage touch, sound, and coordination.
  • Timber planters for hands-on planting and nature-based learning.
  • A large timber storage box to keep resources and equipment safe and tidy.

As a special finishing touch, the children were invited to place their handprints into the sensory path, creating a permanent, personalised element within the space. This not only made the project feel more meaningful but also gave the children a real sense of ownership and pride in their new area.

The final result is a beautiful, inclusive sensory space tailored to the needs of the children. It provides opportunities for both active engagement and peaceful reflection, making it a versatile addition to the setting’s outdoor provision. We were proud to deliver a space that is not only functional and safe, but also deeply personal to the children who will use it every day.
