What Can We Spend the Primary PE and Sport Premium On?
What Is the PE and Sport Premium?
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is government funding designed to improve the quality of physical education, sport and physical activity in primary schools across England. The funding is allocated directly to schools, giving leadership teams the freedom to invest in what will benefit their pupils most.
The government has confirmed that £320 million will be available for the 2025/26 academic year, continuing the commitment to creating healthier and more active school environments.
This funding will be paid in two equal parts:
50% during the autumn term of 2025
The remaining 50% during the spring term of 2026

The allocation will continue to follow the same calculation method used in previous years.
Schools must now report on how they used their 2024–25 PE and Sport Premium. The submission deadline for the digital expenditure return and published report is 5pm on Thursday 31 July 2025.
This ongoing commitment from the government gives schools the certainty they need to plan ahead. It allows leadership teams to invest with confidence in long-term improvements to physical education, active play and inclusive sport – with a strong focus on reaching pupils who are less active or from disadvantaged groups.
You can view the full announcement on the Department for Education website.
